POP-UP GAELTACHT!
King O’Malley’s
7 pm, 13 August 2024
Come along to a Gaeltacht (Irish speaking area) which will be “popping” up in King O’Malley's
in the Snug Room (up the stairs behind the bar)
This event will be grand craic (great fun)!
Everyone is welcome, from people who haven’t got a word of Irish
(but would like to learn a few phrases, or just listen to spoken Irish)
to those who have a little Irish, to fluent Irish speakers.
Enhancing the craic, some Irish songs will be sung as gaeilge (in Irish)
The evening will be held at the same time that the
Canberra Ceoltóirí Traidisiúnta na hÉireann
(Canberra traditional Irish musicians)
hold their seisiún ceoil (music session) providing the enchantment of traditional Irish music in the front section of the pub.
You might also like to partake of a delicious King O’Malley’s meal,
drink a Guinness (or two), or try the mulled wine!

FRIENDS OF IRELAND INVITE YOU TO JOIN US FOR
SAINT BRIGID’S DAY 2024 - 6pm, Weds 21 February 2024
when we celebrate the strengths and achievements of women
Saint Brigid is Ireland’s own female Abbess of Kildare and a patron saint of Ireland. She was a bishop in the 5th-century and is the patroness of many things, including poetry, learning, healing, protection, blacksmithing, livestock and dairy production.
In her honour we will be gathering at the Federal Room, Federal Golf Club, Gowrie Drive, Red Hill at 6pm, Weds 21 February 2024. Entertainment will include traditional Irish music, song and dancing. This event is free for financial members of Friends of Ireland. Non-members can join FoI for $20 or $10 concession per year. Register for this event using this: link . For further information contact us through this website at: ‘Contact Us’ above.
We thank the Irish Embassy for their support and acknowledge government of Ireland funding.
Our guest speaker will be Bernadette Boss.
Bernadette was a Magistrate of the ACT, an officer in the Australian Army Reserve and a former barrister. In her military career, she was the first woman to be a commanding officer of the Sydney University Regiment and the first woman to conduct an inquiry into the combat death of a soldier. Bernadette was appointed as the first (interim) National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention on 1 Oct 2020.
Bernadette will give a talk on the life of St Brigid. There is an interesting historical debate about how much of her story is based on the life of a real person and how much was drawn from Celtic mythology.
